FIRE INSPECTIONS
Released: April 2026 Download the Full Report here This audit assesses whether Fire conducted all required inspections and has sufficient staffing to handle workload. We were unable to confirm whether the department completed all required annual inspections because its system records were unreliable. We found that Fire lacked a complete inventory of sites requiring annual inspection, inconsistently documented inspections, and did not resolve some inspections timely. Fire was aware of and had begun to address the incomplete site list and data unreliability. We also found inspectors conducted multiple follow-up visits to sites that had not yet complied without charging fees for those additional visits. Also, staff fell short of the department’s daily inspection goals. Our recommendations are geared toward creating a more complete list of inspection sites, improving inspection data accuracy, recovering costs for services, and optimizing use of staff resources. |
We found:
- Fire (Atlanta Fire Rescue Department) inspects sites for fire hazards and has two inspection units—Aviation (covering the airport) and Downtown (covering the rest of the city).
- The population of sites in Accela that require annual inspections is incomplete.
